A. Shnfurd died at his home in Brevard last. Monday night after an illness of several months. At the time of his death He was about seventy-eight years of age. He served in the Confederate army with conrage and di^tinctinc- tion, and in all his-dealings with his friends and neighbors his con duct has been marked by honesty and fair dealing. Mr. Shuford was a native of this county, a son of David and Sarah Shuford. He has been twice married, first to Miss Julia A. Hood, on June 17, 1875, who died on the 19th day of Sep tember,.1895. He was again mar ried on the 11th day of November, 1897, to Miss Ursula A. Siniard, a daughter of Captain Lee Siniard of this county. Mr. Shuford was never blessed with children, and he was the last of his immediate family. The funeral services were con ducted from the Methodist church Wednesday morning by Rev. Loy D. Thompson, assisted by Rev. C. M. Carpenter, and the interment was at^ the Davidson River cemc- tery. The following were the pall bear ers: O. K. Orrdied at her home in Asheville last Thursday after noon following an illness of two months. For several days before hejr death her relatives realized that she was in a very dangerous condi tion and but little hoplb was enter tained for recovery. Mrs. Orr was a native of Pitts burg, Pa., and was Miss Elizabeth Dnlzell before her marriage to Mr. Orr. Mrs. Orr came from Pittsburg with her husband to Brevard about six years ago and made this her home for a short time, afterwards removing to Asheville. She was a woman of strong character and made many friends while here. At the time of her death «he was obout for ty-two years of age. She is surviv ed by her husband and two children, Andrew K. Orr, Jr..«and Miss Mary Orr. Mr. Orr is division freight agent for the Southern railway, with headquarters in Asheville, and also secretary of the Transylvania Rail road company. He has n\any friends in Transylvania county who will be grieved to learn of his great loss. Funeral services were conducted from the residence of the deceased last Friday afternoon and the interment was at Riverside ceme- tery,Dr. J. C. Rowe, pastor of Cen tral Methodist church, officiating. The pall bearers were Messrs. O. M. Coston, F. S. Kennett, H. E. Burns, James. H. Wood, A. F. Hall and Joseph Sluder. CEDAR MOUNTAIN NEWS THE RECORDER’S COURT. The recorder had a very easy time of it last M onday morning there being only three cases come before him. Of these none of them came- to trial, prosecution being- with drawn in one case and the other two were continued. The following docket was all that needed attention Monday: State V. George Perry, fornication and adultery, prosecution with drawn the prosecutor, John Ponders to pay the co^. This case grew out of the fight between Howard Erwin and George Perry, which was tried last week. It seems that there was a lack of eyidence in this case to convict and so the recorder made the prosecuting witness pay the cost and dimissed the case. State V. Howard Er^n, assault with deadly weapon, continued one week. This case grew out of the fight above mentioned also. Mr. and Mrs. M. H. Croswell are visitors at Cedar Mountain. They are spending their honeymoon in the mountains. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Batson a fine boy. Weight nine pounds. The writer wishes to say that the CtEsar’s Head road is in good condition. Mr. H. M. Geer, the proprietor of Caesar’s Head hDtel, is planning for a big" crowd this season. Mr. Rowley Hooker is working at Caasar’s Head this week. Mr. Carol Jones was a visitor at W. M. Burns’ Sunday. Miss Cora McCrary has returned home fora few days vacation. Miss Carrie Burns was a visitor here Monday. J. E. McCrary and Asa Hooker are on the sick list this week. Mr. E. M. Raxter and his younger brother were at Cedar Mountain Saturday on a fox chase. They re port having a fine chase and secur ing one coon and a number of squirrels. Mr. Ed Batson made a business trip to South Carolina Saturday. J. E. McCrary made a business trip to Grenville, S. C., Tuesday. A large crowd of young people from Little River passed through this section Friday on their way to Caesar’s Head. Cedar Mountain singing choir joined the Shady Grove choir of South Carolina in an all-day sing ing contest last Sunday. Uncle Billie. TUESJDAY, MAY 27. 3:00 p. m.—Regular meeting of alumni association. 8:00 p. m.—Graduation exercises. Address by Rev. C. A. Wood, pre siding elder of Asheville district, W. N. C. conference. Award of diplomas, certificates and other honors. Presentation of cup to vrinning society. All entertainments are open to all friends of the school. An ad mission fee of twenty-five cents will be charged for the primary operetta Friday evening, the field day exercises Saturday afternoon and the inter-society contest Mon day evening. Seats can be re served at the drug stores. For all other exercises admission is free. Exercises must begin promptly at the hour advertised, and doors will be closed during the rendering of anynnnvber. In some counties of the state a large per cent of the population has been found to be inf^ted with the hookworm disease. In thiaooun ty, and especially in Brevard, a large per cent of the population would doubtless be found invested with the fisb-hookworm disease.
